It's Time to Winterize!

Though it will take some work, winterizing and protecting your landscaping will definitely pay off when your yard is thriving and blooming again in the spring and you don't have to make any repairs that were damaged from the winter.

  • Irrigation systems should be winterized by opening drains and clearing lines that may freeze.
  • The gutters should also be cleared to prevent clogs. Clogs can lead to freezing the water trapped by the clogs can freeze, expanding and dislodging the hardware that fastens it.
  • The most important fertilizing comes in the fall before winter hits - a low-nitrogen fertilizer.
    • Fertilizing your grass in the winter allows it to hold up in the cold and freezing temperatures. Think of this fall fertilizer to your lawn as antifreeze is to your car's radiator.
  • Limit the use of salt or snow-melting granules, because they can harm the plants and soil of your beds.
  • Try to limit walking on frozen grass as much as possible to prevent damage and leaving footprints of broken grass blades.
  • Make sure that potted plants have a good draining system so the water inside doesn't freeze and break the pot. Add spacers under the plants to allow drainage.
