Landscaping Maintenance

No matter how low-maintenance your landscaping may be, no yard will ever be maintenance-free. Here are a few tasks that you'll need to include in your up-keep routine in order to have your yard and garden looking great. Make sure that if you can't contribute a lot of time or don't want to spend a lot of effort on your landscape to choose additions that require little maintenance.

Unwanted Pests

Planting Areas

Because some plants need constant attention, you may want to choose an annual plant, which will come back year after year without replanting. Covering your soil with organic mulch will also help with retaining moisture and keeping weeds away.

Insect Control

Instead of using harsh chemicals on your plants to keep the insects away, you can purchase ladybugs, which will get rid of pests, from a garden center. Another effective way is by using natural, home remedy methods like placing a tin plate with beer in a slug infested garden to attract and kill them.

Weeding

When getting rid of weeds, the whole plant including the roots must be removed to prevent regrowth. Herbicides can be used but those may also kill surrounding plants.

Weed Prevention

Laying an inch-thick layer of mulch down will keep your garden relatively free of weeds. By working proactively to prevent weeds, you'll reduce the amount of time you'll need to be out pulling weeds.

Mowing

Longer grass is healthy and better at retaining water, so you shouldn't cut your grass too short. When you cut the grass too short, you'll have to water and fertilize it to help it replenish and grow.

Leaf Removal

Leaves should be removed from gardens because they can block sunlight from getting to the plants and may trap water near the plants' roots and cause rotting roots.

Fertilizing

How often you'll need to fertilize your yard and gardens will depend on the climate you live in.
