Burlap Benefits in the Garden

Make the Most of Burlap in Your Garden

Growing Garden

Aid Germination

Placing a damp layer of burlap over newly sowed seeds will help them germinate by keeping them moist. Once they begin to germinate, remove the burlap so they can be exposed to the light and start growing.

Block Weeds

Layer burlap bags, slightly overlapping, over the paths in your garden. Then spread about three inches of woodchips on top of the bags to keep weeds down.

Build New Beds

To create a garden space full of nutrient-rich soil ready for spring planting, you should sheet mulch the desired area in the fall. This kills the grass while building great soil for your plants. Lay a thick layer of damp cardboard and spread grass clippings, shredded leaves and compost on top. Cover the area with burlap, which will help speed up the decomposition process.

Protect your Compost Pile

Covering your compost pile with burlap bags (and a plywood lid for good measure) will help keep the moisture and nutrients from being washed away by the rain.

Keep your Compost Pile in Place

Covering your compost pile with burlap bags will also help keep all of your composting materials in the pile. None of your organic pieces will wash or blow away if they've got a secure cover over them.

Outdoor Burlap Tablecloth

The pretty woven texture of burlap can help decorate your garden area and offers a nice rustic look that compliments the flowers and vegetables growing in your garden.
