Burlap Uses in Organic Gardens

Because burlap is made from the Jute plant and fibers, it's a natural and organic product that is perfect to use in your organic garden.

Jute Plant and Fiber

There are numerous ways to incorporate burlap in your organic garden because it is cheap, permeable and biodegradable.

  • Burlap Weed Fabric
    • Keeps out the weed seeds while letting the water flow through to your garden and will eventually break down and help fertilize.
  • Burlap Plant Baskets and Containers
    • Look attractive and are much cheaper than branded liners.
    • Add multiple layers to create a sturdy hanging basket. One layer won't hold very well.
  • Balled and Burlap Trees
    • New trees that are ready for planting often have their root balls wrapped in burlap. Some may choose to remove the burlap before planting, but this isn't necessary unless the burlap is synthetic, which won't decompose in the ground.
  • Burlap Plant Protection
    • Wrap your trees trunk with burlap to protect them from sunscald/windburn or from pesky critters. Also create a burlap fence around your garden by stapling it to wooden posts.
